Every morning when I have a day off and stay home, my husband, Peter, says to me before he leaves for work, “Be happy.”
Honestly, I am sometimes bored and don’t know what to do with myself. I want to enjoy my day off while also feeling productive. Many times, to make my day more enjoyable, I go around and wander through different stores, hoping to find something nice or useful. Finding something I like gives me a temporary sense of achievement.
However, shopping cannot make me truly happy. After the excitement fades, I often feel empty.
One day, I was sitting at my desk, thinking about what I really wanted to do—something I could genuinely enjoy and love. Then I thought, Wht not cooking or writing?
Cooking has always been something I enjoy. Sometimes, I have followed recipes from YouTube and other online sources, but I have also created my own recipes, many of which turned out delicious. I have often thought about sharing my recipes, but somehow I have never felt inspired enough to take that step. I would simply keep those recipes to myself.
Writing is another hobby of mine. More than anything, I want to create a record of my life—a collection of memories that captures the experiences I have had along the way. I believe writing can help clarify my thoughts, preserve meaningful moments, and encourage personal growth.
People often say that life is like a one-way journey. Along the road, we experience all kinds of things—happiness, hardship, disappointment, discovery, and achievement. We cannot turn back or travel the same road again. All we can do is appreciate the scenery on both sides of the road and record some of those moments in writing.
So, from now on, I have decided to write down the things I have seen, learned, and experienced. I will continue cooking, experimenting with my own recipes, and perhaps share them someday when I feel ready.
Finding something that truly makes me happy matters to me. I want to keep that thought in mind and make my days off more meaningful—not simply by consuming things, but by creating something of my own.
Perhaps this is what Peter means when he tells me, “Be happy.” Maybe happiness is not something I need to go out and find. Maybe it is something I can create, one day at a time.
Two weeks ago, while I was driving to work early in the morning, I received a phone call from my daughter, Lily, who was vacationing with her friends in the Dolomites, Italy. Her voice trembled with anxiety as she told me that she had fallen from her bicycle while riding along a rocky, rugged uphill trail. The accident left her with two deep lacerations on her chin—one inside her mouth and one on the outside. By the time she called, she had already been taken to a local hospital and was waiting to receive stitches.
As a mother, my heart sank. I desperately wanted to know how serious her injuries were. More than anything, I wanted to leave New York immediately and fly to Italy to be by her side. I didn’t care how far away she was or how expensive the plane ticket might be. At that moment, nothing mattered more than her health and safety.
Lily, however, is a mature and resilient young woman. She gently refused my offer to come and insisted that she could manage with the help of her friends. At that moment, I realized that my little girl had truly grown into an independent adult. Although I knew the situation was frightening and painful for her, I also knew she possessed the strength and determination to face it with courage. Before hanging up, she told me that the procedure would take about an hour and that she would call me afterward.
Although I knew her injuries were not life-threatening, I also knew she would be in pain. Throughout the agonizing wait, I was overwhelmed with anxiety and unable to concentrate on my work. Countless questions raced through my mind. How severe were her wounds? Was she in unbearable pain? Were the doctors and nurses taking good care of her? Was the suturing procedure going smoothly? The same worries replayed in my mind again and again.
Yet the moment that haunted me most was something she said before we ended our call. In a trembling voice, she asked, “Mom, can you please not be mad at me?”I was stunned. “Why would I be mad at you?” I replied. “Seeing you hurt like this breaks my heart.” The moment she heard those words, she burst into tears, sobbing like a frightened little girl. It felt as though a knife had pierced my heart.
At that instant, I realized how deeply she had internalized a parenting pattern that is common in many traditional Chinese families. When children make mistakes or get hurt, parents often react first with criticism for being careless before offering comfort and support. Although I had never intended to make her fear my reaction more than her own injuries, her first instinct was to worry that I would be angry with her. That realization filled me with guilt and made me reflect on how deeply cultural expectations can shape a child’s emotions.
Perhaps it is time for those of us who grew up with this style of parenting to rethink the lessons we inherited. Rather than responding with criticism when our children are at their most vulnerable, we should offer them unconditional love, reassurance, and support. In moments of fear and uncertainty, what they need most is to know they are not alone.
While I anxiously waited for updates from the hospital, I sent her a text message:
“I am so proud of you for facing this with such courage. You are strong, resilient, and an amazing person. I am also deeply grateful for all of your friends who have been there to support you. Please give each of them a big hug from me—they are truly kind and caring. Take good care of yourself. Remember that your dad and I will always be your backbone, standing by your side no matter what happens. We love you with all our hearts.”
Forty-five minutes later, my phone finally buzzed with a reply.
“Don’t make me cut an onion again, Mom. The procedure went well, and everyone at the hospital treated me with such kindness.”
Reading those words, I finally released the breath I had been holding. Tears welled up in my eyes—not only because I knew she was safe, but because I realized that my love and encouragement had reached her when she needed them most.
That day became a turning point in my journey as a mother. I learned that when our children face life’s unexpected hardships, they do not need criticism—they need compassion. They need to know that, no matter what happens, home is a place of unconditional love, acceptance, and support.
Our children may not remember every word we say, but they will always remember how we made them feel during the most difficult moments of their lives.
Santorini, a volcanic island known for its unique landforms and picturesque scenery, captivates visitors from around the world every year. Although the island is not particularly large compared with some other beautiful Greek islands, it can become extremely crowded during the peak summer season. To avoid the worst of the crowds, my family with 5 people scheduled three days in our itinerary to explore and experience this quintessential Mediterranean destination at the end of May.
There are two main ways to travel from Athens to Santorini. The first is by air, with flights lasting approximately 45 minutes and costing around $60. Flights depart from Athens International Airport. The second option is by ferry, primarily from the Port of Piraeus. High-speed ferries take approximately 4.5 to 5 hours, while conventional ferries take between 7.5 and 9 hours. Ticket prices generally range from $40 to $120, depending on the type of ferry and ticket. Since we had only three days to explore the island, we chose to fly from Athens and eagerly began our Santorini adventure.
Santorini’s Airport is small and mainly serves the tourists coming and departing from the island. Before our trip, we had done some research and learned that taxis were quite pricey. Therefore, we booked an Airbnb, Oia Lucky Emerald Residence, with a high rating of 4.9 through the Airbnb App. The Owner arranged services of airport pickup and manual luggage drop-off at the property, but it charged separately. This arrangement was extremely convenient because we were able to leave the airport and quickly start our journey in Oia.
Our driver was very friendly and gave us an informative tour while we were traveling along the road toward Oia. Although the airport was far from Oia, we were fascinated by the exclusive caldera scenery, with its scattered whitewashed houses, creating unforgettable views along the road without becoming boring.
About 45 minutes later, we arrived at the local public parking lot, where two muscle men had already waited to carry our luggage and accompany us up the narrow, rocky, uphill steps to our Airbnb, which was situated in the center of Oia, a short walk from all the restaurants, shops, and cafes.
Our Airbnb was designed in the traditional cave-house style and looked as though it had been carved on the island long ago. With its large, spacious layout and two bathrooms inside, and a kitchen with essential cooking appliances and a refrigerator, it allowed a family of 5 or 6 to stay. The most outstanding feature of the house was its upper balcony, where we could enjoy breathtaking views of both the sunrise and sunset, as well as the expansive caldera and the deep blue Aegean Sea.
We were especially amazed by the terraced, whitewashed buildings and iconic blue domes illuminated by golden sunlight, which became absolutely stunning, iconic postcard-perfect pictures of Santorini that none would forget.
Exploring Oia
After settling in, we began exploring Oia. We were surprised that this small village was packed with visitors, making it lively and vibrant. The bustling, narrow, winding cobblestoned streets were lined with an array of traditional houses, chic boutiques, art galleries, and iconic local souvenir shops, creating an exclusive, postcard view that seemed to be every photographer’s dream.
The blue-domed churches in Oia were symbolic charms in Oia. These churches, such as the Church of Panagia Platsani, were the most popular and attractive, and it not only offered visitors a glimpse of the island’s architectural heritagebut also provided some of the most beautiful backdrops for photographs. Their bright white walls and distinctive blue domes created the unforgettable scenery that has become synonymous with Santorini.
The first dinner in Oia exceeded our expectations. While wandering through the streets, we chose a popular Greek and Mediterranean restaurant called Thalami. Sitting outdoors at a table overlooking the caldera was a truly unforgettable experience. The restaurant had a beautiful atmosphere and served fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes, including shrimp orzo and Greek salad. Everything we ordered was incredibly delicious.
The Magic of a Santorini Sunset
The sunset in Santorini is one of the island’s most magical experiences. Visitors flock to the best viewpoints to watch the sun slowly disappear below the horizon. As the sun descends, the whitewashed buildings and colorful houses reflect the brilliant golden light, creating a magical paradise along the Aegean Sea.
The combination of the golden sky, dazzling white buildings, and deep blue water was truly breathtaking. It was easy to understand why so many travelers consider a Santorini sunset one of the most unforgettable experiences in Greece.
A Day in Fira
Fira, the heart of Santorini, is perched dramatically on the edge of a cliff and is another must-visit destination on the island. Traveling from Oia to Fira by public bus was convenient and affordable. The journey took approximately 20 minutes, and we paid the conductor in cash for a ticket costing around $2. Sometimes, a ticket seller was available outside the bus before boarding, although online tickets were not available.
Fira was a bustling hub that beautifully combined natural scenery, cultural richness, and modern amenities. Several churches and monasteries, including the Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, were architectural gems that offered postcard-perfect views and a peaceful atmosphere.
As we wandered through the narrow, winding streets, we were excited to discover a highly rated restaurant called Tholoto Brunch & Restaurant, where we stopped for brunch. Located in Kontochori, in Fira, this cozy and charming restaurant focused on Mediterranean and Greek cuisine and emphasized fresh local ingredients. Everything we ordered was outstanding and became one of the highlights of our visit to Fira.
Fira also had countless cafés and bars lining its narrow streets and cliffside pathways. One of the places we chose was Boozer Bar, perched dramatically on the edge of the cliff. Sitting at one of the outermost tables, enjoying our drinks, listening to relaxing Mediterranean music, and overlooking the panoramic views of the deep blue Aegean Sea, we felt truly blessed.
Whether wandering through its charming streets, admiring the caldera scenery, or embracing its vibrant atmosphere, Fira offered us an extraordinary experience.
A Memorable Dinner at Ammoudi Bay
Oia, our main base, offered not only spectacular scenery but also delightful Mediterranean cuisine that left us with unforgettable memories.
Ammoudi Fish Tavern, one of the most famous restaurants in Santorini, truly delighted our taste buds and lifted our spirits. This remarkable restaurant is located at Ammoudi Bay, below the village of Oia, directly beside the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea. Reaching the bay requires descending approximately 300 steps from Oia.
We were amazed by the fresh seafood sourced from local fishermen, as well as the vegetables and other ingredients produced in the surrounding area. Together, these fresh ingredients created unique and outstanding flavors.
While dining, we enjoyed breathtaking views of the deep blue Aegean Sea and the striking volcanic red rocks illuminated by the setting sun. It was such a romantic and spectacular moment that none of us will ever forget.
Because this popular restaurant can become very busy, making a reservation in advance is highly recommended. Although the prices were relatively high, the magnificent setting, beautiful scenery, and warm hospitality made the experience truly indelible.
Exploring Santorini’s Volcanic Landscape
Taking a private tour to explore Santorini’s volcanic landscape gave us another unforgettable experience. Following the recommendation of our Airbnb host, we booked a six-hour private tour on our third day.
Early that morning, we met our driver, Mr. Alaxznda, at the local public parking lot. A native of Santorini who had worked in the car-tour business for many years, he was extremely knowledgeable about the island’s history, religion, geography, and local culture.
He was friendly and talkative and drove his luxury minivan skillfully along the island’s winding and narrow roads. As we traveled, we enjoyed breathtaking views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea along the road, and we learned a lot about local customs and culture from him.
Our driver took us across the volcanic island to explore its unique landscapes, including the famous red and black beaches. We visited quintessential whitewashed villages and discovered some of the best locations for photographs as well. His knowledge of the island helped us experience Santorini from a different perspective and left us with an even deeper appreciation of this extraordinary volcanic island.
Our Final Thoughts and Travel Tips
With only three days in Santorini, our itinerary was fully packed. As part of the Cyclades, the island offers so much spectacular scenery and so many unique experiences that even three busy days were not enough to see everything.
With its iconic whitewashed villages, blue-domed churches perched on dramatic cliffs, and the deep blue Aegean Sea reflecting the golden sunlight, Santorini truly captivated us. It is a destination we would love to return to someday.
My Suggestions for Visiting Santorini
Santorini is one of the most popular destinations in Greece, so I recommend avoiding the peak summer months of June and July if possible. Besides being extremely crowded, the weather can become very hot, making it difficult to enjoy outdoor activities. Prices for accommodations and other services may also be significantly higher during the peak season.
I also recommend booking a hotel or Airbnb with a balcony. There is nothing better than relaxing while taking in views of the sparkling Aegean Sea, the magnificent caldera, and the many boats and vessels cruising across the water.
Finally, if you want to watch the sunset and take amazing photographs, arrive at your chosen viewing spot early to secure a good location. The best viewpoints can become extremely crowded, especially during the high season.
Santorini is more than just a beautiful destination. It is a place where volcanic landscapes, traditional architecture, Mediterranean cuisine, and breathtaking sunsets come together to create a memorable travel experience.
Athens, the birthplace of philosophy, art, science, and architecture, has influenced and inspired the world for centuries. Its rich cultural heritage captivates visitors around the world. As part of our European vacation in late May, we set aside four days to explore this legendary city. Although four days were not enough to see every corner of Athens, we made an effective itinerary that allowed us to enjoy an unforgettable experience.
Our journey began on a bright morning as we boarded an Aegean Airlines flight at Istanbul Airport. During the one-hour flight, I could hardly hold up my excitement. As the aircraft slowly descended toward Athens International Airport, breathtaking views unfolded before my eyes. The rugged coastline, scattered islands across the sparkling Aegean Sea, and the ancient landscape combined to create a magical and deeply emotional first impression. It was the perfect welcome to a city where history and modern life coexist in harmony.
Athens International Airport was located far from the city center. Several transportation options are available, but after landing, we chose to take Bus X95 because it was convenient, affordable, and less crowded. Although the ride took a little over an hour, it was comfortable and brought us directly to downtown Athens. We stayed in an Airbnb apartment just a short walk to the Acropolis Museum, Plaka, Monastiraki, Syntagma Square, and the Greek Parliament, making it very convenient to explore the city’s most iconic attractions.
Athens is a unique city where many historic sites have been well preserved, playing a significant role in modern urban infrastructure. My first impression was of the ancient marble streets that remained solid, smooth, and polished, stretching throughout the city center as if inviting visitors to walk back through history. However, these marble streets can become extremely slippery when it rains, so wearing anti-slip shoes on rainy days is essential.
After a short break to recharge, we set off for our first adventure—the Acropolis Museum. This world-class museum showcased the extraordinary civilization, culture, architecture, and daily life of ancient Greece. We were fascinated by the priceless sculptures and artifacts from the Parthenon. One of the most remarkable features was its glass floors, which allowed visitors walking through to look down at the archaeological excavations. Stepping above seemed like traveling through history itself. The Acropolis Museum not only highlights the richness of ancient Greek civilization, but it also serves as a testament to the glory and accomplishments of human history.
Of course, enjoying authentic Greek cuisine was one of the highlights of our trip. That evening, we dined at a highly rated seafood restaurant called Atlantikos, which my daughter, Chelsea, discovered online. Every traditional Greek seafood dish we ordered—including fried calamari, grilled prawns, fresh mussels, and several local specialties—was absolutely delicious and exceeded our expectations. This popular restaurant had a 4.5-star rating and was located in the lively Psirri neighborhood, and offered reasonable prices along with generous portions. Although it is small and has a simple atmosphere with outdoor seating, its outstanding food attracts both locals and tourists. To avoid the crowds during peak dinner hours, I highly recommend arriving early.
Early next morning, my sister, Vivian, and my nephew, Dustin, arrived in Athens on a flight from New York City and joined our family adventure. With our travel group now complete, we headed to the Acropolis, one of the world’s most iconic historical landmarks. Standing on a rocky hill above the city, this ancient citadel is home to extraordinary monuments, including the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaea, and the Temple of Athena Nike.
As first-time visitors, we were overwhelmed by the grandeur, beauty, and historical significance of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Before even entering the archaeological site, we eagerly began exploring the surrounding area. Walking along the ancient stone pathways, we could recognize the contrast between modern Athens and its ancient past. Each step we took toward the top seemed to direct us back thousands of years. Although the pathways had some rocky and rugged sections, they were well-preserved and easy to navigate as we gradually climbed to the summit. When we finally reached the top, we were astonished by the breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of Athens. The vibrant modern city stretched endlessly in every direction. At the same time, the immemorial ruins blended seamlessly with the modern metropolises, creating an unfolded, magnificent layer of the urban landscape that none of us will ever forget.
After spending several hours exploring the archaeological surrounding area, we purchased the admission tickets to the Acropolis monuments. We were astonished by their majesty and grandeur. Those spectacular monuments that were carved exquisitely from brilliant white Pentelic marble displayed each individual’s beauty, and under the Mediterranean sun, made the structures outstanding. Every column, sculpture, and architectural detail reflected the extraordinary artistic glory of the ancient Greeks, making the Acropolis an unforgettable sight. Standing among these magnificent ancient structures, we admired the remarkable achievements of one of history’s greatest civilizations. It was undoubtedly the highlight of our visit to Athens. If I could offer one piece of advice, I would highly recommend getting here as early as possible in the morning. Visiting in the middle of the day definitely was not a good idea. The site would be overcrowded, making it difficult to appreciate the ancient charm or capture great photographs of its beauty.
Later that afternoon, we had dinner at Athena’s Cook, a restaurant near Syntagma Square and Ermou Street recommended by one of Dustin’s friends. With its excellent 4.7-star rating, the restaurant offers creative Greek and Mediterranean dishes in a cozy setting. The souvlaki, moussaka, local beers, and Greek wines were exceptional and made for another memorable dining experience.
The following day, we took a full-day excursion to the Meteora Monasteries, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Chelsea had booked the tour through the GetYourGuide.com website about three weeks before our trip. Since the excursion lasted nearly twelve hours, we left early in the morning and took an Uber to the departure point near Athens’ Larissa Train Station, where we boarded a luxury coach and met our guide.
During the journey, we had three stops for coffee, lunch, and dinner. Each stop offered delicious and varied local Greek cuisine, making the long drive much more relaxing and enjoyable. Our guide, Alex, originally from Canada, was great. He spoke fluent English and was passionate about Greek history. He entertained us throughout the journey with fascinating stories about the region’s history, culture, and monasteries. His engaging storytelling and wealth of knowledge made the long drive an enriching experience.
The unique rock formations of Meteora were truly breathtaking. Towering stone pillars pierced the sky, and cliff-top monasteries seemed to reach the GOD the closest, created strikingly and magnificent picturesque scene. Whether admiring the extraordinary geological formations or the remarkable monasteries perched high upon the cliffs, we were constantly amazed. The spectacular scenery, rich history, and excellent organization made this tour one of the most unforgettable experiences of our trip to Greece.
Our fourth day was our final day in Athens. We spent the morning strolling through the Roman Agora, located on the northern side of the Acropolis in the Monastiraki district. The archaeological sites are scattered throughout the neighborhood as open-air museums, and each location is a short walk from the next. Purchasing an e-ticket online in advance or buying a ticket at the entrance worked well and made visiting convenient.
The Monastiraki district is filled with charming shops, cafés, restaurants, and lively markets, which were bustling with residents and visitors. With those traditional Greek souvenir stores that displayed their iconic and exclusivity created an energetic and vibrant atmosphere, attracting tourists soaking in. We truly enjoyed browsing for this blended city lifestyle with ancient charm.
Although our short period of a four-day visit to Athens, we gained a great deal about Western civilization and its influence on modern-day global society. We came to realize that this country is a tremendous treasury of art, culture, philosophy, and history that deserve to be explored again, as it says on the billboard in Athens’ airport: “Timeless beauties, Endless discoveries.”
