Santorini, a volcanic island known for its unique landforms and picturesque scenery, captivates visitors from around the world every year. Although the island is not particularly large compared with some other beautiful Greek islands, it can become extremely crowded during the peak summer season. To avoid the worst of the crowds, my family with 5 people scheduled three days in our itinerary to explore and experience this quintessential Mediterranean destination at the end of May.

There are two main ways to travel from Athens to Santorini. The first is by air, with flights lasting approximately 45 minutes and costing around $60. Flights depart from Athens International Airport. The second option is by ferry, primarily from the Port of Piraeus. High-speed ferries take approximately 4.5 to 5 hours, while conventional ferries take between 7.5 and 9 hours. Ticket prices generally range from $40 to $120, depending on the type of ferry and ticket. Since we had only three days to explore the island, we chose to fly from Athens and eagerly began our Santorini adventure.

Santorini’s Airport is small and mainly serves the tourists coming and departing from the island. Before our trip, we had done some research and learned that taxis were quite pricey. Therefore, we booked an Airbnb, Oia Lucky Emerald Residence, with a high rating of 4.9 through the Airbnb App.   The Owner arranged services of airport pickup and manual luggage drop-off at the property, but it charged separately.  This arrangement was extremely convenient because we were able to leave the airport and quickly start our journey in Oia.

  Our driver was very friendly and gave us an informative tour while we were traveling along the road toward Oia. Although the airport was far from Oia, we were fascinated by the exclusive caldera scenery, with its scattered whitewashed houses, creating unforgettable views along the road without becoming boring.

About 45 minutes later, we arrived at the local public parking lot, where two muscle men had already waited to carry our luggage and accompany us up the narrow, rocky, uphill steps to our Airbnb, which was situated in the center of Oia, a short walk from all the restaurants, shops, and cafes.

Our Airbnb was designed in the traditional cave-house style and looked as though it had been carved on the island long ago. With its large, spacious layout and two bathrooms inside, and a kitchen with essential cooking appliances and a refrigerator, it allowed a family of 5 or 6 to stay. The most outstanding feature of the house was its upper balcony, where we could enjoy breathtaking views of both the sunrise and sunset, as well as the expansive caldera and the deep blue Aegean Sea.

We were especially amazed by the terraced, whitewashed buildings and iconic blue domes illuminated by golden sunlight, which became absolutely stunning, iconic postcard-perfect pictures of Santorini that none would forget.

Exploring Oia

After settling in, we began exploring Oia. We were surprised that this small village was packed with visitors, making it lively and vibrant. The bustling, narrow, winding cobblestoned streets were lined with an array of traditional houses, chic boutiques, art galleries, and iconic local souvenir shops, creating an exclusive, postcard view that seemed to be every photographer’s dream.

  The blue-domed churches in Oia were symbolic charms in Oia. These churches, such as the Church of Panagia Platsani, were the most popular and attractive, and it not only offered visitors a glimpse of the island’s architectural heritagebut also provided some of the most beautiful backdrops for photographs. Their bright white walls and distinctive blue domes created the unforgettable scenery that has become synonymous with Santorini.

The first dinner in Oia exceeded our expectations. While wandering through the streets, we chose a popular Greek and Mediterranean restaurant called Thalami. Sitting outdoors at a table overlooking the caldera was a truly unforgettable experience. The restaurant had a beautiful atmosphere and served fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes, including shrimp orzo and Greek salad. Everything we ordered was incredibly delicious.

The Magic of a Santorini Sunset

The sunset in Santorini is one of the island’s most magical experiences. Visitors flock to the best viewpoints to watch the sun slowly disappear below the horizon. As the sun descends, the whitewashed buildings and colorful houses reflect the brilliant golden light, creating a magical paradise along the Aegean Sea.

The combination of the golden sky, dazzling white buildings, and deep blue water was truly breathtaking. It was easy to understand why so many travelers consider a Santorini sunset one of the most unforgettable experiences in Greece.

A Day in Fira

Fira, the heart of Santorini, is perched dramatically on the edge of a cliff and is another must-visit destination on the island. Traveling from Oia to Fira by public bus was convenient and affordable. The journey took approximately 20 minutes, and we paid the conductor in cash for a ticket costing around $2. Sometimes, a ticket seller was available outside the bus before boarding, although online tickets were not available.

Fira was a bustling hub that beautifully combined natural scenery, cultural richness, and modern amenities. Several churches and monasteries, including the Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, were architectural gems that offered postcard-perfect views and a peaceful atmosphere.

As we wandered through the narrow, winding streets, we were excited to discover a highly rated restaurant called Tholoto Brunch & Restaurant, where we stopped for brunch. Located in Kontochori, in Fira, this cozy and charming restaurant focused on Mediterranean and Greek cuisine and emphasized fresh local ingredients. Everything we ordered was outstanding and became one of the highlights of our visit to Fira.

Fira also had countless cafés and bars lining its narrow streets and cliffside pathways. One of the places we chose was Boozer Bar, perched dramatically on the edge of the cliff. Sitting at one of the outermost tables, enjoying our drinks, listening to relaxing Mediterranean music, and overlooking the panoramic views of the deep blue Aegean Sea, we felt truly blessed.

Whether wandering through its charming streets, admiring the caldera scenery, or embracing its vibrant atmosphere, Fira offered us an extraordinary experience.

A Memorable Dinner at Ammoudi Bay

Oia, our main base, offered not only spectacular scenery but also delightful Mediterranean cuisine that left us with unforgettable memories.

Ammoudi Fish Tavern, one of the most famous restaurants in Santorini, truly delighted our taste buds and lifted our spirits. This remarkable restaurant is located at Ammoudi Bay, below the village of Oia, directly beside the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea. Reaching the bay requires descending approximately 300 steps from Oia.

We were amazed by the fresh seafood sourced from local fishermen, as well as the vegetables and other ingredients produced in the surrounding area. Together, these fresh ingredients created unique and outstanding flavors.

While dining, we enjoyed breathtaking views of the deep blue Aegean Sea and the striking volcanic red rocks illuminated by the setting sun. It was such a romantic and spectacular moment that none of us will ever forget.

Because this popular restaurant can become very busy, making a reservation in advance is highly recommended. Although the prices were relatively high, the magnificent setting, beautiful scenery, and warm hospitality made the experience truly indelible.

Exploring Santorini’s Volcanic Landscape

Taking a private tour to explore Santorini’s volcanic landscape gave us another unforgettable experience. Following the recommendation of our Airbnb host, we booked a six-hour private tour on our third day.

Early that morning, we met our driver, Mr. Alaxznda, at the local public parking lot. A native of Santorini who had worked in the car-tour business for many years, he was extremely knowledgeable about the island’s history, religion, geography, and local culture.

He was friendly and talkative and drove his luxury minivan skillfully along the island’s winding and narrow roads. As we traveled, we enjoyed breathtaking views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea along the road, and we learned a lot about local customs and culture from him.

Our driver took us across the volcanic island to explore its unique landscapes, including the famous red and black beaches. We visited quintessential whitewashed villages and discovered some of the best locations for photographs as well.  His knowledge of the island helped us experience Santorini from a different perspective and left us with an even deeper appreciation of this extraordinary volcanic island.

Our Final Thoughts and Travel Tips

With only three days in Santorini, our itinerary was fully packed. As part of the Cyclades, the island offers so much spectacular scenery and so many unique experiences that even three busy days were not enough to see everything.

With its iconic whitewashed villages, blue-domed churches perched on dramatic cliffs, and the deep blue Aegean Sea reflecting the golden sunlight, Santorini truly captivated us. It is a destination we would love to return to someday.

My Suggestions for Visiting Santorini

Santorini is one of the most popular destinations in Greece, so I recommend avoiding the peak summer months of June and July if possible. Besides being extremely crowded, the weather can become very hot, making it difficult to enjoy outdoor activities. Prices for accommodations and other services may also be significantly higher during the peak season.

I also recommend booking a hotel or Airbnb with a balcony. There is nothing better than relaxing while taking in views of the sparkling Aegean Sea, the magnificent caldera, and the many boats and vessels cruising across the water.

Finally, if you want to watch the sunset and take amazing photographs, arrive at your chosen viewing spot early to secure a good location. The best viewpoints can become extremely crowded, especially during the high season.

Santorini is more than just a beautiful destination. It is a place where volcanic landscapes, traditional architecture, Mediterranean cuisine, and breathtaking sunsets come together to create a memorable travel experience.
